This eight barrel small batch bourbon is a collaboration between Dark Arts Whiskey House and the Project to Preserve African American Turf History (PPAATH.net). It celebrates the 150th Kentucky Derby and Isaac Murphy, the winningest jockey of all time.
This 7-year-old bourbon (60% Corn. 36% Rye. 4% Malted Barley) has been finished with a variety of toasted French oak staves, and bottled at cask strength (typically around 110-115 proof). It was distilled in Indiana, aged in Indiana and Kentucky, and finished, blended and bottled in Lexington, KY. Estimated 1200 - 1600 bottles. Limited special offering in partnership with PPATH.org.
TASTING NOTES
APPEARANCE Deep amber with rich, syrupy legs coating the glass.
NOSE Aromas of burnt caramel, vanilla bean, and toasted oak mingle with hints of baking spices and a subtle floral note.
PALATE You're greeted with an explosion of flavors, starting with layers of creamy crème brûlée, followed by bold notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. The high rye content adds a delightful kick of peppery spice, balanced by the sweetness from the oak aging.
FINISH The finish is long and lingering, with the warmth of cask strength bourbon enveloping the senses. A touch of dark chocolate and caramel lingers on the palate, leaving a satisfyingly sweet and spicy aftertaste.

Isaac Burns Murphy (April 16, 1861 - February 12, 1896) was an African-American Hall of Fame jockey who’s considered one of the greatest riders in thoroughbred racing history. He was the first jockey to win the Kentucky derby on three times (1884, 1890, and 1891). Moreover, his 44% career winning rate remains an all-time industry record. Isaac Murphy was the epitome of a superstar athlete whose talent transcended cultures, race, and time.
